Smoking and Mortality - Beyond Established Causes.

Currently there are 21 common diseases formally attributed to cigarette smoking. This study found that in addition to those 21 diseases, smoking increased risk of death from renal failure, intestinal ischemia, hypertensive heart disease, infections, various respiratory diseases, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. The researchers also found that for former smokers, the risk for each of these diseases declined with time.  (N Engl J Med. 2015 Feb 12;372(7):631-640.)
